Aubrey Plaza Recalls Failed Deadpool 2 Audition: ‘Me and Ryan Reynolds, What Could Go Wrong?'

Summary

  • Aubrey Plaza reveals she auditioned for Deadpool 2 and regrets not getting the role, believing she and Ryan Reynolds would have been a great team.
  • Plaza’s similar humor to Reynolds makes her a fitting addition to the Merc with a Mouth saga, and fans would have loved to see them together.
  • Plaza will join the MCU in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, which is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in late 2024.

Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza has already played a Marvel character (in the critically-acclaimed FX series Legion) long before her upcoming debut in the MCU with Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. But she came very close to playing another one. The former sitcom star will join Kathryn Hahn in one of Marvel Studios’ upcoming original series for Disney+, which works as a spinoff of WandaVision, the show in which Hahn debuted as Agatha Harkness. The actress is reportedly playing another powerful witch and Agatha’s former lover, who goes by the name of Rio Vidal. However, this is not the first time that the actress is part of a project related to the world of Marvel.

Plaza played Lenny Busker in Legion, a series set in the X-Men universe. And, as the actress now reveals, she almost managed to extend her inclusion in the mutant franchise. In an interview with Cosmopolitan shared by Aubrey Plaza Updates on X, the actress recalled her failed audition for Deadpool 2:

“There are a lot of roles that I really wanted that I didn’t get, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know, the one that sticks out to me for some reason, I think it was Deadpool 2. I had just come off a plane and I think I was shooting Legion at the time, and I really wasn’t in a good zone because you have to be in an auditioning zone and I was in a ‘work zone.’ That one hurt. Me and Ryan Reynolds, what could go wrong? We Would be great together.”

Plaza makes a good point when she says that she and Reynolds would have made a good team, since they both have quite similar humor, and the actress would no doubt have been an excellent addition to the Merc with a Mouth saga.

Could Aubrey Plaza Be the New Lara Croft in a Tomb Raider Reboot?

Vertical Entertainment

In addition to having the opportunity to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Aubrey Plaza has been on the minds of video game fans since last year, after director Edgar Wright believed she was chosen to star in a new adaptation of Tomb Raider. Followers of the acclaimed game see the actress as a very good option for the role, and after Wright’s statements she herself said that it would be an honor to be able to play such an iconic character as Lara Croft.

Although the latest film version of the game, starring Alicia Vikander, was quite well received and performed decently at the box office, the sequel that was in development has now been scrapped. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was chosen by Amazon Studios to develop a new movie, which will connect with the video games and with any future project in the franchise, which is one of the many brands the company is looking to put to good use after partnering with MGM. So if Plaza were selected for the role, she would be in for a busy couple of years.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in late 2024 as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
