When can Ivan Toney train again? Brentford striker says ban like ‘being in football prison’

Brentford play Newcastle this weekend but Ivan Toney is not allowed to feature against his former team.

Toney has not featured since a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on May 6 after being handed an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.

The England star has been unable to train with his Bees teammates as per the conditions of the ban and is instead working out alone.

The 27-year-old is not allowed to take to the pitch again until January 17 but the training part of his suspension is almost over.

Toney will undoubtedly be watching as Brentford battle Newcastle on Saturday, but it’ll be the next day that’ll actually mean more to him.

When can Ivan Toney train again?

Toney can return to training on Sunday, September 17.

That is a day after Brentford look to continue their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season at St James’ Park.

Sunday will be a recovery day for the squad involved, meaning Toney will have to wait until Monday to train with his Bees teammates.

“When I am around the boys, it will get a bit easier,” Toney told The Diary Of A CEO podcast.

Toney added: “The whole football community is big on mental health and then the FA are going to do this and push me away. It’s not a place I want people to feel sorry for me. That’s the last thing that I want.

“So, what if someone not as strong as me in the head is going through this situation and their punishment is they are not allowed at the club – that would break them.

“Right now, not being around the training ground, it does hurt me. I just know when I’m at the training ground, I train harder.

“It’s not a nice feeling. Not being allowed at the training ground is baffling to me.

“I’m counting down the days until I can be training and around the boys. It’s like being in football prison at the moment.”
