Playing alongside stars such as Gareth Southgate, Gaizka Mendieta and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as the Teessiders made their way to the UEFA Cup final in 2006, Wheater made 157 appearances for Middlesbrough before spending eight and a half years with Bolton.
More recently, the towering central defender has played for Oldham Athletic and Darlington whom he played for until the end of last season.
As well as playing at every level in the English pyramid, Wheater so nearly boasted a full house at international level having played for England at youth level before representing the under-19s and under-21s.
He was even called up to England’s senior squad on a number of occasions under Fabio Capello in 2008, but failed to make an appearance off the bench for the Three Lions.

But that didn’t stop the notorious joker from enjoying memories that will last a lifetime in a hilarious retirement post on Instagram.
Taking to social media, Wheater said: “Think the time has finally come to hang up the boots.
“Thank you to Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers, Darlington Football Club and England for having me I loved every minute of playing for you but I won’t bore you with too many sentiments and tell you the truth instead.
“My body hurts, I pull my calves walking down the stairs, I nearly pull my thigh every time I play footy with my 7 year old and I’m scared to get over jogging pace incase my hammy pops.

“I pick the kids toys up off the floor and my back goes, I have love handles and my belly is expanding, I would rather eat a fry up or a nice Chinese instead of going to training and a few pints takes 5 days to get over.
“It’s been one a hell of a ride though, capped at every level playing for England and a couple of bench appearances for the senior team and as you know I’ve had a shower with David Beckham and John Terry follows me on Instagram so I’m very happy with my career.”
