The men’s elite and age-group races will feature a course almost identical to the course used during the traditional long-distance series back in June.
2023 Men’s Ironman World Championship venue
This year for the first time, the event will take place across two separate locations on different days. Nice and Kona are set to co-host the upcoming event up until 2026. Following which the men and women’s events will switch locations each year. Meanwhile, the women’s event will take place one month later, on 14 October, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
2023 Men’s Ironman World Championship Nice stars to watch
This year, the reigning champions of the last two editions, Norwegian stars – Gustav Iden (2022) and Kristian Blummenfelt (2021), will not compete. Both athletes shifted their focus on the short-course format as look to qualify for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
As such, this year’s favorites include, Germany’s multiple champions Patrick Lange and Jan Frodeno, France’s Sam Laidlow, and Denmark’s Magnus Ditlev and Max Neumann of Australia. Alistair Brownlee, Sam Long, Lionel Sanders, Tim O’Donnell and Ben Hoffmann are also some notable names worth watching.
Race course details
Nice holds the special distinction of hosting the first-ever long-distance triathlon in Europe back on 20 November 1982. It was called the Nice triathlon. This year’s course features a 3.8km swim in the Mediterranean, followed by a 180.2km bike loop through the Alpes-Maritime region. The track consists of steep climbs and technical descents, totaling an elevation gain of 2,427m. Meanwhile, the course in Kona features a 42.2km run across four laps, with fans lined up along the route.
